SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA - On Saturday, May 21, 2011, SSgt. Nichols led the Poolees from RSS Poway in San Diego on an 8 Mile Hump.
Since leaving the Marine Corps in March 2007, SSgt. Nichols has been working with Recruiting Stations, Recruiters and Poolee’s across the nation. SSgt. Nichols has received recognition from the Commandant of the Marine Corps for his outstanding support and dedication to God, Country and Corps.
On Saturday, MDI Nichols and a team of Drill Instructors facilitated the 8 Mile Hump after the recruiters dropped the Poolees off. From that point forward, the Drill Instructor team provided the recruits an “insider” experience of the realities of Marine Corps Boot Camp. The Poolees had no idea that SSgt. Nichols and his team would be present so there was an element of “Shock and Awe” at the beginning of the hike.
During the Hump, the Poolees sounded off with famous Marine Corps Recruits ditties such as:
“DI: Tighter……... Poolees: Tighter Aye-Aye Sir”
“DI: Check’em….. Poolees: Kill”
“DI: AT&T…........ Poolees: Reach out and touch somebody”
Once they arrived at the top of the mountain, the Poolees sat down and ate MRE’s. SSgt. Ryan Hunt, the RSS Poway SNCOIC, taught a Core Values Class and then allowed SSgt. Nichols to speak from a Senior Drill Instructor standpoint. After about a ½ hour, the Poolees were ready to get back in the fight and finish the Hump that they started earlier that morning. They put their packs back on and the Drill Instructors turned up the stress down the mountain.
SSgt. Nichols is the Senior Motivational Drill Instructor of MDI 8 (www.mdi8.com), an outdoor fitness company offering functional fitness to clients in the San Diego area.
